Rate-Distortion Models for FGS-encoded Video Sequences

چکیده
Fine granularity scalability (FGS) coding enables finer bitrate scalability and better error resiliency than traditional multi-layer coding, because it allows truncating a bitstream at arbitrary bits. This flexibility enables streaming applications a more space to optimize quality (i.e., minimize distortion) at a given channel bandwidth. This optimization relies on accurate estimation of the rate-distortion (R-D) characteristics of video sequences. In this paper, we analyze and compare the performance of the R-D models proposed in the literature for FGS coding systems. We analyze the models by following their mathematical derivations and scrutinizing their assumptions. We perform the comparison by implementing the models and conducting an extensive experimental study using a large set of video sequences with diverse image and motion complexities. The results of our experiments provide guidelines for choosing the appropriate R-D model for rate-distortion optimized streaming applications.

Evaluating the Streaming of FGS–Encoded Video with Rate–Distortion Traces
The MPEG–4 video coding standard has recently been enriched with Fine Granularity Scalability (FGS) a new coding technique expressly designed for video streaming. With FGS coding the video stream can be flexibly truncated at very fine granularity to adapt to the available network resources. In this report we provide a framework for the evaluation of the streaming of FGS-encoded video. The frame...

In this paper, we propose a constant quality rate allocation algorithm for MPEG-4 FGS (Fine Granularity Scalability) coded video sequences. The rate allocation problem is formulated as a constrained minimization of quality fluctuation. The minimization is solved using a novel composite rate distortion analysis. For a set of video frames, a composite rate distortion curve is first computed and t...

Fine granularity scalability (FGS), a new coding technique that has recently been added to the MPEG-4 video coding standard, allows for the flexible scaling of each individual video frame at very fine granularity. This flexibility makes FGS video very well suited for rate-distortion optimized streaming mechanisms, which minimize the distortion (i.e. maximize the quality) of the streamed video b...

In this paper, we analyze statistical and rate-distortion (R-D) properties of MPEG-4 Fine-Granular Scalability (FGS), which has recently become an important scalable compression framework and a de-facto standard for Internet video streaming. We first propose a novel statistical model of DCT residue that accurately captures the properties of the input to the MPEG-4 FGS enhancement layer. Our res...
متن کاملOptimal rate control methods for fine granularity scalable video
In this paper we present two optimum (in a rate-distortion – RD – sense) rate-control algorithms for FGS scalable video. The proposed methods, which could compliment recently proposed RD FGS algorithms for bit allocation among different FGS frames, are targeted for optimum rate allocation among the different macroblock bitplanes within each FGS frame. The proposed methods are also designed to b...
